Description:

North Pacific, Hawaiian Islands, Kaupo, ca. 16th to 18th century CE. A group of 3 stone fishing net sinkers and game pieces used for a game known as 'ulu maika. The sinker is drilled through the center for suspension and the surface has glimmering mica flecks throughout. The playing pieces are shaped into rounded, discoidal forms - one from a porous volcanic stone, the other from white coral. The 'ulu maika game was one of the most popular forms of entertainment in Hawaii and was played on a course known as a kahuamaika. The objective was to roll the stones as close as possible to a pair of wooden stakes, the most points were awarded to stones landing between the two stakes.
