Description:

Western Europe, Germany or Italy, Late Renaissance period, ca. second half of the 16th century CE. A lovely rectangular strongbox with a wooden body and a hinged lid wrapped in tooled leather and reinforced with several hammered iron strips. An open ovoid handle is attached to the top of the lid, and elegant floral motifs are expertly etched onto most leather surfaces. The interior of the vessel is lined with crimson-hued paper, and the front of the body features a functional iron lock and key mechanism. Strongboxes like this example were used for storing petite trinkets, jewelry, coins, or other valuable items. Size: 5.4" L x 8.2" W x 3.9" H (13.7 cm x 20.8 cm x 9.9 cm)

  • Condition: Minor chips and losses to some interior areas, interior paper lining, and wood slats on body and lid as shown. Slight bending to some iron components, with light abrasions to base, body, lid, and lock mechanism, and minor staining within body. Nice earthen deposits and wonderful patina throughout.
