Description:

Germany, 16th to 17th century CE. This is a pottery fragment of a brown glazed German Bellarmine jug, also known as a Bartmann jug, from the German "Bartmann" for "bearded man". These jugs were manufactured and used throughout Europe but are particularly associated with the Cologne region of contemporary western Germany. This fragment shows a bearded man's face on the neck and a fragment of a seal below on the shoulder. Size: 5.8" L x 3.6" W x 5" H (14.7 cm x 9.1 cm x 12.7 cm).

Provenance: Ex-private M. Reniger collection, Chicago, IL.
