Description:

Europe, France, Renaissance to Baroque Period, ca. 16th to 17th century CE. A beautiful wood Romayne panel of rectangular form, skillfully hand-carved to present the tondo of a helmeted soldier surrounded by scrolling vegetal motifs, all enveloped in a chocolate brown finish. The muscular gentleman is depicted with his left hand to his chest as though wounded as he gazes downward, his visor pulled up to reveal a visage of round eyes beneath a furrowed brow, a pointed nose, and a petite mouth surrounded by an arched moustache and a short beard. His long neck extends from the top of his thin gorget, which caps a breast plate and frilled shoulder guards. Romaynes like this example would have served as furniture ornaments or architectural elements adorning the walls of a lavish palace or city hall. Size: 11.8" W x 13.2" H (30 cm x 33.5 cm)

Romayne refers to the decoration of furniture and architecture with carved medallions, knobs, or finial in the form of human or grotesque heads. Romayne work was especially popular in western Europe during the Renaissance and Early Modern period.
