Description:

Europe, probably France, 1541 to 1600 CE. This is a printed page from a Latin Catholic Missal, with the mass for the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (Mariæ Virginis). The page has a large initial G and is bordered by engraved artwork depicting Christian and Biblical scenes and cherubs, including Jacob's Ladder, the Gate of Heaven, and Noah's dove. Many of the scenes are moments from Mary's life, and at the top is a large woodcut of Her Assumption. As was common at this time, significant words and letters are printed in red. The 16th century was a time of innovation in printing, especially in the range of illustrations available, with the invention of engraving and etching to replace the more tedious woodcutting. The font of the piece is a form of Garamond, which is today an option on many word processing programs, but was invented in the second half of the 16th century by Claude Garamond and Robert Estienne in Paris for King Francis I. Size: 9.1" W x 13.5" H (23.1 cm x 34.3 cm).
