Description:

Europe, France, Loire or Bourgogne areas, ca. 16th century CE. An expertly carved, painted, and shellacked sculptural depiction of the Pieta, with the sorrowful Virgin Mary dressed in her traditional gown and robe (note the red pigment remaining on her gown and the blue pigment remaining on her robe) cradling the body of Christ following the Descent from the Cross, attached to wooden base with wooden dowels. Quite a dramatic and poignant rendering. Size: 8.25" W x 9.5" H (21 cm x 24.1 cm)

Provenance: Ex- Estate of M. Reiniger, Chicago, IL; ex-Antiqueo European Archaeology & Medieval Works of Art, acquired at Parisian auction
