Description:

Northern Europe, ca. 16th century CE. A pair of near-identical dark wood corbels, each carved in the form of a shield with a cross and a dragon above two heads set on their sides. Perhaps the shields represent Saint George. The use of corbels is common in architecture from this period, and it is easy to imagine decorative corbels like this one in a manorial house or a church. Size of one (they are the same size): 7.7" L x 6.7" W x 15" H (19.6 cm x 17 cm x 38.1 cm)

#136049

  • Condition: Each has some cracking associated with aging, notably on the base. One has some damage to the shield area and may have been repaired near the top of the shield. This same one also has a loss from the upper back, presumably from where it was once hung. Excellent preservation of motifs.
