Western Europe, probably England or France, ca. 16th to 17th century CE. A dazzling copper ring with gold and silver gilding of two-part construction with the terminals of the slender shank soldered to the underside of an ovoid bezel. Within the gently beveled edge of the bezel is a form-fitting, hand-carved nicolo intaglio exhibiting the left-facing bust of a Maenad, a devout follower of the Greek god of wine and revelry Dionysus (Roman Bacchus).
