Description:

Europe, ca. 16th to 17th centuries CE. This is a heavy cast bronze pharmacy mortar and pestle with designs of lion heads and ribs/columns around its middle. Mortars of this style were made throughout western Europe, with similar examples coming from Spain, Italy, France, Germany, and Holland. Medical practitioners during this time period -- who today we would not recognize as doctors -- would have used mortars like these combined with pestles to make up medicines, many of which did more harm than good. Size of mortar: 5.4" W x 4.2" H (13.7 cm x 10.7 cm); pestle: 9" L x 1.8" W (22.9 cm x 4.6 cm).

Provenance: Ex-Paul and Louise Bernheimer collection, Cambridge, MA and Laguna Woods, CA., acquired before 1980.
