Western Europe, probably England or France, ca. 16th to 17th century CE. A lovely 39.7% gold ring with a slender shank and an ovoid bezel on top. Within the form-fitting space of the bezel is a hand-carved sardonyx cameo exhibiting the left-facing profile bust of a slightly older man with a receding hair line, delineated facial wrinkles, and a heavy eyebrow above a squinting eye. The opaque white bust protrudes from atop a tan-hued base stone. Size (cameo): 0.63" L x 0.45" W (1.6 cm x 1.1 cm); (ring setting): 0.74" L x 0.81" W x 0.92" H (1.9 cm x 2.1 cm x 2.3 cm); gold quality: 39.7% (equivalent to 9K+); weight: 5.6 grams; US ring size: 6
