Western Europe, probably England or France, ca. 16th century CE. A lovely 83.07% gold ring of wearable form featuring a hand-carved carnelian intaglio set within the form-fitting ovoid bezel. Incised atop the carnelian is the left-facing portrait of a youthful man with curling locks, full cheeks, and a piercing stare, perhaps depicting an athlete or a mythological figure. Size (intaglio): 0.54" L x 0.42" W x 0.10" H (1.4 cm x 1.1 cm x 0.3 cm); (ring setting): 0.68" L x 0.81" W x 0.82" H (1.7 cm x 2.1 cm x 2.1 cm); gold quality: 83.07% (equivalent to 18K+); weight: 3.9 grams; US ring size: 7
