Western Europe, probably England or France, ca. 16th century CE. A delicate 72% gold ring exhibiting a relatively circular bezel as well as a bifurcated shank that is soldered to the sides of the lower bezel rim. Within the bezel is a form-fitting, hand-carved carnelian intaglio exhibiting the left-facing bust profile of an aristocratic woman. Her wide eyes and dainty nose are situated neatly beneath a backswept coiffure that culminates in a rectangular bun. Size (intaglio): 0.48" L x 0.46" W x 0.13" H (1.2 cm x 1.2 cm x 0.3 cm); (ring setting): 0.51" L x 0.89" W x 0.88" H (1.3 cm x 2.3 cm x 2.2 cm); gold quality: 72% (equivalent to 15K+); weight: 1.9 grams; US ring size: 9.5

  • Condition: Wearable as shown. Slight bending to shank, with light abrasions on shank and carnelian, otherwise intact and excellent. Great luster throughout, and nice preservation to finer details on intaglio.
