Description:

Arctic region, Thule culture or similar, ca. 1500 to 1900 CE. An anthropomorphic figure carved from a short seal bone, in the form of a seated human with a skeletal body and a large, cuboid head. The figure has the knees drawn up, with the feet below carefully carved, and sits on a rounded dias. He has his arms drawn up to rest behind his neck. His face bears a look of complete concern, with wide, incised eyes, a long nose, and a thin line for a mouth. Concentric circles form his ears, which is a classic style often associated with the Thule culture - perhaps one influenced by their contact with Norse peoples in Greenland and Newfoundland. Size: 0.8" W x 3.9" H (2 cm x 9.9 cm)
