Description:

Central Asia, Afghanistan, ca. early 16th century CE. A beautiful oil lamp cast from leaded-brass via the lost wax (cire perdue) technique with six slender wick spouts projecting from the circular upper body. The dark-brown lamp rests atop a flared foot engraved with foliate and fleur-de-lis motifs within peaked archways, and trapezoidal panels around the lower body enclose spade-tipped flowers. The sloped shoulder is engraved with large Arabic text, and the hinged lid resembles a stylized feline head. An openwork handle has an egg-shaped finger hole which is surmounted by a minimalist avian finial. Fine patina envelops the entire vessel. Size: 9.125" W x 8.375" H (23.2 cm x 21.3 cm)
