Description:

**Originally Listed At $1500**

Central Asia, Tibet or Nepal, ca. 15th to 17th century CE. A repousse copper mandorla or aureole that was a decorative back for a devotional statue, the arching panel embellished with auspicious symbols from Hindu-Buddhist beliefs. The scrolling openwork floral designs are influenced by the metal work of the Pala style from Eastern India that spread into the Himalaya region. This mandorla would have been positioned behind a deity figure forming an ornate halo or aura - the indented arch at the center likely framed the figure's head. At the base are attendant figures, and above are garuda and serpentine nagas - mythical creatures associated with the Hindu deity, Vishnu. Size: 8.75" W x 10.75" H (22.2 cm x 27.3 cm); 13.5" H (34.3 cm) on included custom stand.
