Description:

**Originally Listed At $400**

Central Asia, Tibet, ca. 15th to 16th century CE. A cast bronze teapot with low relief patterns and a thin textile tea cosy. Around the rim of the pot is a low relief design that includes the Eight Auspicious Symbols of Buddhism, with a shell, a wheel, a lotus flower, a parasol, a knot, a pair of fish, a banner, and a vase. These were once gilded, and some of the gilding remains. A delicate spout rises from the lower body in a gentle curve. Drinking tea is a traditional activity in Tibet, and has been since the 7th century CE. The type of tea commonly consumed is called "butter tea," made from tea leaves, yak butter, water, and salt, and it is served in Tibetan households and to guests to this day. This vessel was used to partake of this wonderful custom! Size: 5.5" L x 3.25" W x 5" H (14 cm x 8.3 cm x 12.7 cm)

  • Condition: Metal surfaces have very dark green patina. Some gilding remains around the rim. Cloth is in fragile condition, faded, and frayed but still present - surprising for a textile this old. End of spout has an old repair.
