Description:

Southeast Asia, Thailand, Sawankhalok, Sukhothai, ca. 15th to 16th century CE. A fabulous, hand-built pottery kendi vessel modeled after a hamsa (also hansa or angsa) that is interpreted as goose or swan-like bird used as a vehicle (vahana) by Brahma in Hindu mythology. The tall vessel presents with a conical base flanked with a pair of bent legs and has a bulbous, egg-shaped body decorated with protruding lateral wings, perky hind feathers, and a four-petaled flower centered on the chest. The tail stretches up and connects with the neck to form a handle lined with circular protrusions similar to those on the collar surrounding the bird's neck. The charming head is raised upwards and has a pair of petite eyes, a central crest, and a narrow beak that doubles as the kendi's spout. Enveloped in layers of light green-blue glaze, this is a gorgeous example of functional Sukhothai pottery! Size: 2.875" W x 9.5" H (7.3 cm x 24.1 cm)
