Description:

Southeast Asia, Thailand, Sawankhalok culture, ca. 15th century CE. A fabulous ceramic statue of a stylized Ravana or Tosakanth figure standing upright with wonderful applied and glazed details. His delineated legs rest on an integral square base, and he holds a staff in both hands. Ravana’s body is adorned with jewelry, a skirt, and an ornate headdress or crown. The intense face is stylized with bared fangs, protruding eyes under heavy brows, and a mustache. Ravana, also known as Tosakanth in Thailand, was a demon king, often a symbol of evil in some traditions, but also considered to be one of the strongest devotees of Shiva. He appears in the Buddhist Mahayana text as a symbol of prosperity. The surface is glazed a pale white-gray, with black and brown details. A rare example of this demonic figure! Size: 5" W x 13.24" H (12.7 cm x 33.6 cm)
