Southeast Asia, Thailand or Cambodia, Khmer Empire, ca. 15th century CE. A wonderful cast-brass head depicting an Apsara (translates as nymph, fairy, or celestial maiden), a female spirit who is associated with the clouds and the waters below. The head sits upon a wide conical neck and has slender eyes beneath heavy brows, a prominent nose, full lips, puffy cheeks, and a wide forehead, all beneath a fiery headdress. Fine espresso-hued patina covers the entirety of this lovely head. Size: 3" W x 5" H (7.6 cm x 12.7 cm).
