Description:

Southeast Asia, Thailand, ca. 15th century CE. A set of 3 bronze or brass Buddha heads as well as a pottery seated Buddha covered in silver-hued metal foil. Each Buddha head features a conical ushnisha and downcast eyes while the seated Buddha figure holds hands in the Bhumisparsha mudra. Size (largest Buddha head): 1.2" L x 1.3" W x 2.7" H (3 cm x 3.3 cm x 6.9 cm); 4.75" H (12.1 cm) on included custom stand.

According to the consignor, this piece was previously owned by the Portland Art Museum in Oregon.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, acquired from 2000 to 2010; ex-Portland Art Museum, Oregon, deaccession numbers 2001.82.1, 2001.82.2, 2001.82.8, and ST 2001.5.1

  • Condition: Each Buddha head was likely part of a larger figure at one time. Minor nicks and abrasions, with tearing and losses to metal foil on seated Buddha, and softening to finer details, otherwise in nice condition. Great patina.
