Description:

Thailand, probably 15th century CE. This is a front fragment of a bronze bust which sits on a post secured to a large and heavy wooden stand. This is a bust of Buddha Gautama Sakyamuni, the Buddha of compassion who, having achieved the highest level of enlightenment, which is here portrayed as a youthful prince with a contemplative expression, rounded dimpled chin, and pronounced eyes. His mouth with full lips is recessed at the corners. He weears his hair in large curls characteristic of the Thai style. Size: 8" L x 5" W (20.3 cm x 12.7 cm)

Provenance: ex-New Jersey Collection, Acquired in New Jersey in 2002 from the state of an American soldier who acquired it in South Korea sometime between 1950 and 1953.
