Description:

Nuremberg, Germany, ca. 1493 CE. This is a leaf -- two-sided page -- from the Nuremberg Chronicle (Die Schedelsche Weltchronik/Liber Chronicarum), a large incunable (a book printed before 1501) with hand-colored woodcut illustrations. The Nuremberg Chronicle is one of the most famous of the Incunabula, written by Hartmann Schedel and printed by Anton Koberger. Schedel obtained a doctorate in medicine in Padua and then moved to Nuremberg, where he became a great collector of books -- a 1498 inventory of his library showed him to have 370 manuscripts and 670 printed books, an enormous quantity for that time period. He drew upon these works to compose his own: the Chronicle paraphrases the events of the Bible and world history, including the history of several European cities. The title was published in both Latin and German; this particular copy is a Latin version. The leaf here is from the "Sexta etas mundi" (Foilum CVIII), the "Sixth Stage of the World" in the history; one side discusses Mary Magdalene and includes a large fine woodcut, hand-colored illustration of St Agnes in addition to some smaller illustrations (including one with a delightful goat). The obverse is illustrated with three early popes -- Clemens (92-99 CE), Anacletus (79-92 CE), and Evaristus (99-107 CE), and a larger inset illustration of St John being boiled alive. Size: 12.75" W x 18" H (32.4 cm x 45.7 cm).
