Description:

East Asia, Korea, Joseon (also Yi) Dynasty, ca. early 15th to late 16th century CE. A lovely wheel-thrown maebyeong (stoneware) vase with a squat foot, a spherical body with a tapered shoulder, and a narrow neck surmounted by a flared rim. The exterior is enveloped in buncheong blue green) celadon glaze that has faded into a soft yellow-green hue that creates an attractive ground for the incised, darker-colored linear motifs around the body and shoulder. While celadon-glazed pottery vessels from the preceding Goryeo Dynasty were considered to be somewhat more refined, buncheong vessels were intended to present as unassuming and more naturalistic in their aesthetic. Size: 6.3" W x 8" H (16 cm x 20.3 cm)

Provenance: private California, USA collection acquired prior to 2005; ex-Xanadu Gallery, San Francisco, California, USA
