Description:

Near East, Persia / Iran, Islamic culture, ca. 15th century CE. A hefty mortar and pestle made from cast leaded-brass, with an octagonal form. The mortar has a loop and ring handle on one side, perhaps for securing the mortar while pounding. The pestle is bisected by a raised rib encircling the center. The eight-sided shape is a popular choice for Persian mortars because it represents the Islamic eight-pointed star, Rub el Hizb. The pestle and mortar show signs of use and are covered with a dark patina. Size of pestle: 9.375" L x 2" W (23.8 cm x 5.1 cm); mortar: 6.75" W x 4.75" H (17.1 cm x 12.1 cm)
