Description:

Middle East/Western Asia, Anatolia (Iran), Islamic culture, ca. 15th century CE. A lovely cast-brass oil lamp with a circular base and a pair of narrow spouts projecting from the body. Resting atop the body is a petite hemispherical lid with a narrow hinge along the verso, and the handle takes the form of a highly stylized cockatrice head with a massive beak, furrowed brows, and a flaming crested mane. Suspension loops on each spout as well as the handle suggest that this lamp was meant to hang above a work table or a writing desk to provide light in the dark of night. Smooth, mottled layers of brown and green patina have formed across the vessel and imbue it with an eye-catching presentation evocative of fine Islamic artistry. Size: 8" L x 5.5" W x 5.625" H (20.3 cm x 14 cm x 14.3 cm)
