Description:

Western Europe, Germany, ca. 15th to 16th century CE. This well-preserved iron Messer-style sword features a single-edged blade and a hooked nagel at the center of the hilt, designed to protect the wielder's hand. The crossguard incorporates a hooked and projecting quillon to shield the knuckles, while the substantial pommel displays a slight curve, enhancing balance and functionality. Although the original grip, likely crafted from organic materials such as bone or wood, has disintegrated over time, the remaining rivet holes provide valuable insight into its construction. Based on its single-edged blade and size, this sword can be classified as either a Langes Messer or a Grosses Messer. Size: 29.6" L x 6.5" W (75.2 cm x 16.5 cm); blade: 23.3" L x 1.5" W (59.2 cm x 3.8 cm)

Provenance: private London, UK collection; ex-private W.P. collection, since the 1990s, acquired on the German art market
