Description:

Western Europe, probably Germany or Netherlands, ca. 15th to 16th century CE. A brass bucket with a thin handle known as a situla that has a relief scene encircling the cylindrical body. Situlas were used for holding holy water and most situla are adorned with Christian imagery. This bucket is constructed from two curved wall panels that are embossed and welded to create the body, and two loops on the rim are riveted to the articulating handle. The embossed scenes contain columns and arches, and under each is a seated Evangelist transcribing the gospels. The Virgin Mary is portrayed on both sides, seated on a throne with flanking attendants and infant Christ on her lap. Size: 9.375" W x 7.25" H (23.8 cm x 18.4 cm)
