Western Europe, France, Burgundy, Auxerre, Renaissance period, ca. 1480 CE. A beautiful vellum leaf from a French Breviary penned in Latin in black gothic book hand. Two-line initials alternating in liquid gold on red or blue grounds of tempera adorn the page with rubrics in red. A breviary is a liturgical book used in Christianity for praying the canonical hours, usually recited at seven fixed prayer times. Size of leaf: 4.5" W x 6.6" H (11.4 cm x 16.8 cm); of matte: 11" W x 14" H (27.9 cm x 35.6 cm)

  • Condition: Leaf from a larger manuscript with some minor tearing and fraying along periphery where removed from binding. Light staining to edges commensurate with age but text is still clear. Good preservation of pigment and gilding. Modern pencil markings to bottom corners and beneath text. Set in modern, custom matte with protective film. Label on verso of matte incorrectly spells the city "Auxerre" as "Auxenne."
