Description:

Eastern Europe, 15th century CE. An interesting copper tray with silver repousse appliques that are riveted with iron pins onto the tray. The tray is simple, a flat form with rolled up edges that flare slightly outwards. The silver appliques are more ornate, with the four around the edges the four Evangelists, and the one in the center showing Christ enthroned. This item was probably used as a collection tray or some other kind of ritual item in a church. With extensive signs of use, we can surmise that it was a prized item, probably used for a long period of time and treasured by the church community. Size: 5" W x 8.3" H (12.7 cm x 21.1 cm)

Provenance: Ex-New Jersey Collection
