East Asia, China, Ming Dynasty, ca. 15th to 16th century CE. A leaded bronze statue of the Bodhisattva known as Guanyin (Avalokiteshvara), the goddess of kindness, compassion, and mercy, Guanyin seated on a mythical beast that may represent a qilin, with one hand forming a mudra gesture, and the other holds a sphere. Guanyin is heavily adorned with a plumed crown, a seat Buddha depicted at the front. Size: 5.75" L x 2.75" W x 7.75" H (14.6 cm x 7 cm x 19.7 cm)

Provenance: private Sylmer, California, USA collection, acquired via descent, originally collected in Asia in the 1950s
