Description:

Southeast Asia, Thailand, ca. 14th to 15th century CE. A serene brass head of Buddha adorned with careful facial details as well as a layer of gold gilding. The tapered face presents downcast eyes, raised brows, and cupped ears with lengthy lobes, all beneath a nodule-studded coiffure centered by a top knot which bore a flaming ushnisha at one time. Size: 2.875" L x 3.3" W x 4.375" H (7.3 cm x 8.4 cm x 11.1 cm); 6.5" H (16.5 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, acquired from 2000 to 2010; deaccessioned from the Museum of Art, Portland, Oregon, ref. no. 2001.82.3

  • Condition: Loss to ushnisha and bottom of neck as shown; was likely part of a larger figure at one time. Abrasions and nicks to face and coiffure, with light patination, and fading to gilding in some areas, otherwise in great condition. Nice remains of gilding across most areas. Old museum number handwritten beneath neck.
