East Asia, Japan, Muromachi period, ca. 1333 to 1573 CE. An impressive leaded bronze mirror boasting a relief verso of Horai-zan, the Island of Immortality, with 2 cranes above a turtle-shaped handle enveloped in vegetal motifs of pines and bamboo. Turtles are a symbol of longevity and felicity in Japanese culture. The elaborate verso is surrounded by an elevated rim, while the face of the mirror presents a smooth, lustrous surface. Size: 3.9" Diameter x .35" H (9.9 cm x 0.9 cm)
