South Asia, southern India, Tamil Nadu, Vijayanagara period, 14th to 17th century CE. A solid leaded bronze figurine depicting Krishna the "Butter Thief" as a toddler crawling forward, holding a lump of ghee or butter in his raised right hand. He is adorned with a charm pendant on his chest, serving as a protective amulet against malevolent forces, and his hair is styled in a conical headdress typical of the Vijayanagara period. According to scripture, Krishna and his older brother Balarama, known for their playful mischief, would steal jars of butter and yogurt from their families and neighbors.
