Description:

East Asia, China, Ming Dynasty, ca. 1368 to 1644 CE. A beautiful cast iron Bodhisattva figure seated on an integral pedestal with 6 legs. This Bodhisattva is dressed in traditional garb - long, draping robes that cascade downward but leave the tips of his feet exposed. He clasps his hands in front of him, holding a sword. The rounded face is serene with benevolent downcast eyes and elongated ears. Upon his head is a crown with petals, perhaps to represent a lotus flower. Bodhisattvas are among the most compassionate beings in the universe, devoting themselves to saving the suffering and helping others achieve enlightenment and Buddhahood. Traditionally depicted as less austere than Buddhas, with graceful postures and elegant garments as a nod to the riches of the Northwestern Chinese Silk Road, this piece is no exception! Size: 5.675" L x 4" W x 12.5" H (14.4 cm x 10.2 cm x 31.8 cm)
