Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 4th century CE. A lovely ovoid carnelian intaglio of warm vermilion hues with sloping edges and depicting an incised of a man's head facing left. The stylized face is defined by a pointed nose, bar-shaped lips, a projecting chin, and a drawn-back coiffure bound by a slender head band. The intaglio is set within the ovoid bezel of a modern ring made from 14K+ gold (60% fineness) with a thick band and wide shoulders. An elegant and wearable example of fine Roman artistry! Size (ring): 0.75" W x 0.9" H (1.9 cm x 2.3 cm); size (intaglio): 0.4" L x 0.3" W (1 cm x 0.8 cm); US ring size 6.5; quality of gold: 14K+ (60% fineness); total weight: 7.3 grams.
