Description:

Western Europe, probably Spain, Medieval period, ca. 13th to 14th century CE. An impressive vellum illuminated manuscript page from a cantus featuring 6 lines of music and 6 lines of gothic rotunda Latin text on each side delineated in hues of black, crimson, and cobalt. Intricate foliate and scroll motifs adorn the left periphery of each side as well as 6 enlarged letters (N,C, B, M, and 2 G's), each of which is the first letter of a new introit, introit verse, or versus ad repetendum. Commonly used as part of mass on the feast day of a martyr, the reading of the chant begins on the verso with "eorum est in tempore…" Size of page: 17.5" L x 13" W (44.4 cm x 33 cm); of frame: 23" L x 18.25" W (58.4 cm x 46.4 cm)

The text reads: "eorum est in tempore tribulationis. Noli aemulari in malignantibus neque zelaveris facientes iniquitatem. Gloria. (Alius Introitus) Clamaverunt justi et dominus exaudivit eos et ex omnibus tribulationibus eorum liberavit eos. Alleluya. Alle lu ya. Benedicam dominum in omni tempore semper laus ejus in ore meo. Gloria. (Alius Introitus) Multae tribulationes justorum et de omnibus..." This roughly translates to: "in their time of trouble. Do not be envious of evildoers, nor be jealous of those who do iniquity. Gloria. (Another Introit) The righteous cried out and the Lord heard them and delivered them from all their troubles. Alleluia Alle lu ya I will bless the Lord at all times and his praise will always be in my mouth. Gloria. (Another Introit) Many tribulations of the righteous and of all..."
