Southeast Asia, Northern Thailand, Chiang Saen, Lanna style, ca. 13th to 14th century CE. A fabulous cast-bronze, Lanna-style bust of Buddha shown from the waist up. He wears a simple garment over his chest, holds his arms in the classic Abhaya mudra position, and has rounded shoulders which taper to a thick neck. The serene visage is composed of downturned eyes, a slender nose above full lips, large ears with drooping lobes, and a smooth brow, all beneath a coiffure of curled hair nodes surmounted by a flaming ushnisha. The interior core of the statue is shaped from pottery and shapes the overall form of the bust. Size: 4" W x 7.1" H (10.2 cm x 18 cm); 11.5" H (29.2 cm) on included custom stand.
The Lanna and Chiang Saen style was used between the 11th and 18th centuries CE. Its influences include the Khmer, Sukhothai, India, Burma, and Sri Lanka. Buddha images of the later Lanna period show the influence of the Sukhothai with finer hair curls, a flame shaped finial, and a thin hair band. The visage by this point became more oval shaped, and the mantle oftentimes extended down to the navel.
This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full report will accompany purchase.

- Condition: This is a fragment of a larger statue. Losses to areas of waist line, arms, and torso, with softening to some finer details, and light encrustations. Nice earthen deposits and fabulous polychrome patina throughout. Two TL drill holes: one behind right arm, and one below waist on right side.
