Description:

Central Asia, Seljuk, ca. 13th century CE. This endearing cast bronze avian pendant or ornament was created in the medieval Turko-Persian empire known as Seljuk (Seljuq). The representation of the bird's head is relatively minimalist no facial features, only the rendering of a pronounced pointed beak to suggest the avian. However, the artist was meticulous about rendering the webbed feet and most of all the plumage of the bird, with cold-worked incisions to delineate the feathers. The entire surface presents with a sage green patina that further contributes to its charm, and there is an integral loop on its back for suspension. Size: 3.375" W x 2.625" H (8.6 cm x 6.7 cm); 2.8" H (7.1 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: ex-Sotheby's London, May 1991, Lot 270 (Note: It was identified as Geometric Greek; however, it has since been identified as Seljuk.)
