Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, the island of Java, Majapahit Empire, ca. 1293 to 1527 CE. An endearing terracotta sculpture of a seated female with a child at her side. The elegant lady displays an hourglass figure with a slender waist and broad shoulders as she holds an object before her and gazes serenely forward, her sensitively-rendered visage flanked by huge annular earrings and crowned by a flared headdress with applied decorations. Though angled towards the mother, the child similarly stares outward, presenting heavy-lidded eyes, full cheeks, a bulbous nose, and a gentle smile, all capped by a conical headdress. Size: 3" W x 6.2" H (7.6 cm x 15.7 cm)

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-Cheshire, England collection, 1980s
