Description:

Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Java, Madjapahit Culture, ca. 13th to 15th century CE. A lovely cast leaded-bronze ghanta bell with an ornate brass handle with a vajra also known as a dorje, a ribbed form that is symbolic of lightening or a diamond. The bell has a domed body with concentric rings around the rim and on the shoulders. The handle is a tiered, columnar form that supports the vajra. The vajra is comprised of four spokes that meet at the top. The vajra represents both the indestructibility of a diamond and the powerful force of a thunderbolt. A ghanta bell is rung by priests to create an auspicious sound for mediation and worship, and this bell still resonates with a nice tone! Size: 3.125" W x 7" H (7.9 cm x 17.8 cm)
