Description:

Near East, Persia / Iran, Seljuq Empire (Seljuk, Saljuq), Kashan, ca. early 13th century CE. A striking and elegant bowl with a delicate ring of openwork below the rim that has had near-translucent blue glaze dripped over it to form windows into the interior. The body is hemispherical, with a flaring body, a tall disc-shaped foot, and a delicate, thin rim. Much of the interior is a brilliant white color, with a dot of cobalt blue in tondo and in a thin ring around the rim. The glaze has gorgeous craquelure and is pooled more thickly in the interior of the vessel, giving the impression of gazing into a pool when viewed from above. Kashan was a Persian city known for producing high-quality pottery during the medieval period. Size: 6" W x 2.7" H (15.2 cm x 6.9 cm)

Provenance: private California, USA collection; ex-Christie's of South Kensington, UK, 18 October 2002 lot 185; LACMA deaccessioned
