Near East, Persia (Iran and Turkey), Kashan, ca. 13th to 14th century CE. A lovely tin-glazed pottery fragment from a square tile that is molded and painted with cobalt blue calligraphic script on an arabesque ground. The large elegant Islamic script is a type known as Thuluth that was popular in medieval Persia for mosques, this tile was part of a larger Qur'anic verse, that may have formed a continuous text as a frieze. The surrounding the raised script is a dense foliage and scrolling ground of ivory white with slips of shimmering golden yellow and teal blue. Size: 7" W x 7" H (17.8 cm x 17.8 cm)
