Description:

East Asia, Japan, middle Kamakura period, ca. 13th to early 14th century CE. A finely preserved head of Buddha carved from wood in the warikubi technique and covered in layers of lacquer, gilding, and brown pigment. The head rests atop an integral circular base protruding from the tapered neck and features sensitively modeled facial features like incised nostrils, a thin mouth, and downcast eyes inset with translucent crystal. The shoukagan (or 'third eye') is inlaid with a petite pearl and acts as a center piece atop the lustrous gilded face. A coiffure of stylized rahotsu hair curls are embellished with brown pigment and coalesce in a broad bun with a frontal recess. Size: 3.5" W x 6.125" H (8.9 cm x 15.6 cm); 9.9" H (25.1 cm) on included custom stand.

  • Condition: Small loss to ornament in front of coiffure as shown. Minor abrasions and darkening to surfaces of neck, face, and coiffure, with light encrustations, and a couple of stable hairline fissures. Nice preservation of facial details and central pearl. Wooden rod inserted beneath neck for display purposes.
