Description:

Near East, northern Iran, Nishapur, Islamic culture, ca. 13th century CE. A wheel-thrown pottery bowl with a squat foot and a deep basin depicting a trio of stylized avian creatures. The basin is vibrantly decorated with an upper helical register of teal and yellow bands above black and red stripes, and the birds are each situated beneath a winged 'cloud' bearing a trio of petite yellow circles in the center. The areas surrounding the birds are detailed with abstract bulbous shapes outlined in black pigment. The bowl's exterior rim is also adorned with bi-chrome triangles as well as black linear motifs. Size: 8.625" W x 3.5" H (21.9 cm x 8.9 cm)

Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection; ex-David Saidian estate collection, New York, New York, USA, to present owner via inheritance

  • Condition: Repaired from multiple large pieces, with resurfacing and overpainting along break lines. Minor nicks to rim and foot, with light fading to original pigmentation. Nice remains of avian iconography within basin.
