Northern Europe, England, Medieval period, ca. 1220 CE. A remarkable vellum leaf from the Book of Job in an English Bible. Penned in black ink with alternating initials of red and blue, the Latin script is written in gothic book hand. The margins are adorned by penwork flourishes, as well as petite doodles of a cross and Greek and Latin script, indicating this page was likely studied heavily by the monks of a monastery. Size of page: 5.75" W x 8.3" H (14.6 cm x 21.1 cm); of matte: 12" W x 16" H (30.5 cm x 40.6 cm)

  • Condition: Leaf from a larger manuscript with some tearing along periphery where removed from binding. Some light stains, but text is still clear. Nice preservation of pigment. Set in modern custom matte with protective plastic film covering. Modern pencil markings in bottom corners.
