Description:

Near East / Holy Land, Byzantine Empire, ca. 13th century CE. A collection of 3 terracotta bowls salvaged from the ocean, probably from an ancient shipwreck. Each is wheel thrown and has a similar form with a short foot and broad basin, the interior of one is sgraffito incised with linear motifs and the other has a creamy glaze in scrolling shapes. White calcite encrustations from marine life, attesting to some time spent submerged underwater. Byzantine pottery workshops that created glazed ware for domestic use based their designs on vessels made of silver or other precious metals. These bowls were made and exported throughout the Empire, and have been found in numerous shipwrecks. Size: 10" Diameter x 3.25" H (25.4 cm x 8.3 cm)

Provenance: East Coast collection, New York Gallery, New York City, New York, USA, acquired before 2010
