Description:

Near East, Byzantine Period, ca. 13th century CE. A wonderful ensemble of 4 pottery bowls with beautifully adorned interiors - 3 displaying liberal remains of pigments and elaborate incised decoration of abstract, phytomorphic, and zoomorphic motifs and 1 with a white-painted medallion of a floral design on a red buff ground - all enveloped in rich marine deposits from centuries spent on the ocean floor. Byzantine pottery workshops that created glazed ware for domestic use based their designs on vessels made of silver or other precious metals. Bowls like these were made throughout the empire and have been found in multiple shipwrecks, hence the heavy sea encrustations found on their surface. Size of largest (all similar in size): 11.3" Diameter x 3.6" H (28.7 cm x 9.1 cm)

Provenance: East Coast collection, New York Gallery, New York City, New York, USA, acquired before 2010
