Description:

**Originally Listed At $600**

Pre-Columbian, Argentina, Catamarca region, Belen culture, ca. 1200 to 1476 CE. A remarkable, hand-built pottery burial urn displaying an elegant form with a bulbous body, a round shoulder, a gently corseted mid-section, a broad neck, and a dramatically flared rim, all sitting upon a narrow base. Flanked by a pair of ribbon-form handles, the body of the vessel boasts a lovely black-on-red decoration of 2 registers with 4 standing birds on the lower section and an abstract pattern of lattice and zigzag motifs along the top register. The interior of the rim is additionally adorned by a ring of black-painted triangles. The simplicity of its form and construction is emblematic of the true, handmade nature of these ceramics. One can see and feel the handwork at all levels - the rim, the body, the handles! Size: 7.5" Diameter x 7.3" H (19 cm x 18.5 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, acquired in 2004; ex-Michael Haskell collection, California, USA
