Description:

Western / Central Asia, Persia, Islamic Seljuk culture, ca. 12th century CE. An attractive and nicely preserved mortar cast from leaded bronze and pestle cast from leaded brass via the lost wax technique that feature intricate foliate programs among darker sections of Arabic text. The stocky, round-bottomed mortar has tall walls and a flared rim surrounding the deep basin as well as several protruding exterior nodules that act as pseudo-handles. The tapered conical pestle has a flared pounding head on the bottom, three rows of Arabic text spaced along the body, and a bulbous handle on top. Both components exhibit thick, green patina atop areas of the smooth, dark brown patina. Size (mortar): 5.5" W x 4.75" H (14 cm x 12.1 cm); (pestle): 7.1" L (18 cm)
