Description:

Western/Central Asia, Persia, northern Iran / western Afghanistan, Seljuk (Seljuq) Empire, ca. 12th to 13th century CE. A fine censer in the form of a standing bird that is cast from brass via the lost wax technique. The avian figure stands atop a pair of narrow feet and balances with its rigid tail feathers while holding its triangular wings out to the sides of the openwork body. The petite head protrudes from atop the conical neck and has a pair of circular eyes in front of a narrow, tapered beak. Faint red pigment covers the entire bird while turquoise adornments are scattered across the exterior. Size: 7" L x 5.6" W (17.8 cm x 14.2 cm)
